A hose reel water tank is the dedicated water storage that feeds a building's hose reel system, the fixed firefighting reels installed on each floor for first-aid firefighting. Unlike a domestic water tank, it exists to hold a protected reserve of water that stays available when it is needed, which is why its capacity, inlet and pump feed are all governed by the fire code.

What is a hose reel tank and what capacity is required?
It is the suction tank that supplies the hose reel pumps. Under SCDF's fire code, hose reel pumps must be fed from a suction tank or inter-connected tanks with a minimum capacity of 1,100 litres, and the tank must be automatically replenished from a town main or other reliable source through a ball valve of at least 50mm diameter. Actual tank size is set by your M&E consultant based on the building and system design.

Can a domestic water tank feed the hose reels?
Only under a specific condition. The fire code states that tanks supplying water for domestic purposes shall not be used as suction for hosereel installations unless arrangements are made for the domestic supply to be drawn off in a way that keeps the required hose reel water reserve preserved at all times.

Which tank material for a hose reel system?
Hose reel water is non-potable, so the tank is selected on durability, location and budget rather than on drinking water compliance. These are the three we install most often.

Sharing a tank with the sprinkler system
A frequent question on mixed fire protection projects, and one where getting the arrangement wrong creates a real compliance problem.
Separate supplies by default
Hose reels, hydrants and external drenchers must not be connected to the sprinkler system or draw from the sprinkler water supply.
Shared tank, tap-off matters
Where a hose reel and automatic sprinkler system do share the same tank, the hose reel tap-off points are positioned above, so the sprinkler reserve stays protected.
Compartment arrangement
Dual-compartment tanks allow one cell to be isolated for cleaning or repair while the system stays in service.

Which tank material is best for a hose reel tank?
Hose reel water is non-potable, so the choice is based on location and service life. HDG pressed steel is the most common for hose reel and sprinkler tanks in Singapore and suits outdoor or roof-level installation. Bitumen painted pressed steel suits indoor plant rooms. SS304 stainless steel is chosen where higher corrosion resistance and a longer service life are required.
Can a leaking hose reel tank be repaired instead of replaced?
Usually yes. Panel bolted tanks are modular, so cracked or leaking panels can often be replaced and joints resealed without rebuilding the whole tank. We inspect the tank, assess the corrosion and structural condition, and advise honestly whether repair works or full replacement is the better option.
Do you supply the hose reel pump as well as the tank?
Yes. We design, supply and install the hose reel pump set alongside the tank, including the control panel, level controls, valves and pipework. Using one contractor for both means the tank, pump and controls are commissioned together rather than coordinated between two parties. See our pump systems page.
How long does a hose reel tank installation take?
It depends on the tank size, the access route into the tank room and whether an existing tank must be dismantled first. Because panel tanks arrive as modular components, they can be carried through normal doorways and assembled in place. We confirm the programme in the quotation after a site visit.
Do you work from the consultant's drawing?
Yes. We regularly work from M&E consultants' and main contractors' drawings, and we can also advise on tank selection where the drawing leaves the material or configuration open. Send us the drawing and we will quote against it.
Do you provide a warranty?
Yes. We use genuine parts from globally recognised manufacturers and provide a warranty on the works and products we install at your premises, subject to terms and conditions. The warranty period is confirmed in the quotation for your tank type.
